How to throw an epic carnival birthday party

Get inspired by the carnival or circus decor to help you plan the perfect carnival themed birthday party

Take look at this cute and festive carnival birthday party for my friend’s son who just turned 4! Her mom made everything and has a special talent for throwing over-the-top birthday parties. The final result was so creative and colorful, I have to share!

The Carnival Games

My friend’s mom set up carnival games for the kids that she set up on the grass. The games include ring toss, knocking over cans, and color-matching ducks. All adorned to include blow-up circus animals wearing party hats. Don’t forget that cute backdrop!

Ring toss

A simple concept that the kids love. You need rings and tall bottles of any kind. My friend’s mom decorated a little by adding tied ribbons to the top of each bottle. There were 6 total bottles in the crate and 6 rings.

Bean bag toss

This game consists of six cans, and three bean bags (corn hole bags work great). With the use of the extra table cloth, she made some decorative ribbons around the bottom front.

She found these individual cotton candy at Costco but did not like the bags they came in. So, she re-bagged them and connected them to a string around the top of the frame.

She actually built this stand out of two crates, some 1x1s, and a piece of wood for the top. Here is a video below for a similar look.

Duck Matching

This is a fun version of a matching card game. Each duck has a color on the bottom. A child will pick two ducks from the bucket. If they find matching colors, they can choose a “prize duck” from the basket below.

Kid Beer Pong or ball toss?

We like to joke this was a kid’s version of beer pong, and for good reason. Most of the kids who saw it yelled, “Beer Pong”. It’s safe to say this simple set up was a hit!

Pin the Nose on the clown

My friend’s son loves this real person with clown tattoos all over his face. This clown is known as Richie the Barber in Huntington Beach.

My friend’s son desperately wanted this clown for his birthday party, and we can’t fathom why. So, my friend’sss mom did the next best thing. She printed a blown-up picture of his face, glued it onto foam board, and made a game of pin the nose on the clown out of it.

Carnival Gift Table

Again, my friend’s mom is a DIY genius. After watching many youtube tuorials, she took on this massive number four. She found the dimensions online, cut it out of foam board, and superglued balloons of all shapes and sizes inside.

Carnival Backdrop

We used a backdrop from amazon, a banner stand, and these clamps for the carnival backdrop.

With the 9″ balloons, we love the look of it. The balloons are from amazon and we used this electric balloon pump to blow them up. There is a special balloon arch strip to make this balloon arch a simple and fun project.

Carnival Centerpieces

For the centerpieces, She filled up a plastic square container with gum balls. Put balloon sticks inside and wrapped them in cellophane. The overall look was a perfect fit for a carnival theme! Everyone wanted to take home a centerpiece!

DIY Elephant Pinata

Once again, my friend’s mom pulled off another incredible pinata. It stood up well against the kids!
