What’s in My Kindergarten Prep Binder 📚✨

If you’ve ever thought, “I should be doing more to prepare my kid for kindergarten…” but also didn’t want to turn your home into a full classroom – Same 😅  Here’s exactly how I use a kindergarten prep binder at home to teach my 4-year-old.

I wanted something simple and consistent that didn’t require hours of prep or wasted paperwork. So I inadvertently created a kindergarten prep binder. And honestly? It’s been one of the easiest, most effective things we’ve added to our routine.

👉 (If you saw our daily routine post, this is exactly what we use during our 9 AM “school time”)

Why I Chose a Binder System (Instead of Worksheets)

I didn’t want:
  • Papers everywhere
  • A million different activities
  • Constant prep
I wanted:

👉 One place
👉 Grab-and-go
👉 Reusable
👉 Consistency
👉 A clear direction

Because let’s be real…

“How do you eat an elephant?”
One bite at a time.

This binder keeps everything in one bite-sized system.

What I Use to Set It Up 🧠

Here’s everything that makes this work (simple, practical, and actually used in our home):

💡 Tip: Simple + Consistent Always Wins.
You don’t need everything on day one.
Start with: Binder + Preschool Posters + Pointer
Then build from there as your child grows.

This is the base of everything. The larger size makes it easier for kids to actually see, follow along, and stay engaged.

This might sound unnecessary… but it’s actually their favorite part 😂 It keeps them engaged, gives them a sense of ownership, and turns learning into something interactive instead of passive.

What We Actually Do (Our Daily Routine)

We keep the binder review to about 30 minutes total. Nothing overwhelming, just consistent. If you stop short one day, just pick up where you left off the next. Skip posters if needed. This is meant to work for you, not stress you out.

👉 The goal is to guide them through the material—not rush mastery.

At first, you’ll do most of the talking and pointing.
Then they start joining in.
Eventually, they’ll lead it themselves with a few prompt questions.

That’s when you know it’s working 💛

✏️ 1. Language (Letters + Sounds)

  • Letter sounds – Sing: “A is for Apple, A A Apple…” while pointing to each letter on the poster
  • Letter recognition –“This is the letter __. It makes the sound __.”
  • Beginning reading awareness – We use these CVC Word Flashcards for simple word building and early writing practice.
📘 When You’re Ready to Level Up introduce these Grade School Posters:
  • Sight Words–  Pick one column and slowly add more as the weeks go
  • Synonyms–  Say the same sentence, but swap out one word each time
  • Word Families – Pick one group and sound them out together until your child joins in
  • Parts of Speech 👉 Start simple: nouns, verbs, adjectives
👉 Then expand when they’re ready

🔢 2. Math

  • Counting – Point as you count from 1 to 100.
  • Evens + odds (start small) – Spot check
  • Counting by 5s and 10s
  • Shapes (2D + 3D)

Nothing complicated—just repetition and exposure.

📘 When You’re Ready to Level Up - introduce these Grade School Posters:
  • Simple Addition –  “1 + 1 = 2” while pointing to each number
  • Subtraction – Introduce after addition concept is understood
  • Fractions – Start with: whole, ½, ¼

👉 The rest will naturally build as they grow.

📅 3. Calendar + Time

  • Days of the week – (Addams Family tune 🎶 — always a hit) “Today is Monday, yesterday was Sunday, and tomorrow is Tuesday”
  • Months of the year – Sing the song. Add in holidays + special birthdays for context
  • Seasons + Weather – “There are 4 seasons, lets list them”, “What’s the weather today?”
  • Today’s date
  • Basic clock awareness– Keep this light—baby steps

This is one of those things that doesn’t click… until one day it just does.

🌎 4. Culture + Geography

  • Pledge of Allegiance
  • Address + phone number: We turned out phone number into a song.
  • Coins + money – “This is a penny. A penny is 1 cent…” “Where is the Nickel?”

  • U.S. States
👉 Ask: “What state do we live in?”
👉 Introduce 1 new state per week using monuments.
👉 Sing the states songs 🎶 (+ capitals)

  • Continents + Oceans
👉 Sing continents song + point to each
👉 “What continent do we live on?” “Where is Asia?”
👉 List the oceans every time by size

  • Rotational Posters:
    • Transportation
    • Baby animals
    • Manners
    • Colors
    • Emotions

This is about exposure—not mastery.

📘 Level Up - introduce these Grade School Posters:
  • Presidents

👉 “Who is our current president?”
👉 “Who was our first president?”
👉 “What is this president known for?”
United States Song
State Capitals Song
7 Continents Song
Presidents Song

🔬 5. Science Basics

  • Planets
    👉 Songs + fun facts
👉 List by distance from the sun
    👉 “The sun is a star” ☀️
  • Body parts – External → internal
  • 5 senses – Use your hand to demonstrate

Simple. Visual. Repeatable.

📘 Level Up - introduce these Grade School Posters:
  • Periodic Table
    👉 Introduce 2–3 elements at a time
👉 Say them out loud and repeat
👉 Let exposure do the work over time
Planets Song

✝️ 6. Faith-Based Learning

For our family, we include:

  • The Lord’s Prayer
  • The 10 Commandments
  • Prayer time
  • Weekly Scripture for Awana

👉 From there, we rotate 1–2 of the other Bible posters daily instead of doing all of them every day.

How We Progress:
  • Start with letters (tracing + sounds)
  • Move to numbers (recognition + counting)
  • Then simple addition → subtraction

What This Actually Looks Like (Real Life)

Some Days We are…

✔ Focused
✔ Engaged
✔ Everything clicks

Other days we are:

✔ Wiggly
✔ Distracted
✔ Done in 5 minutes

Both count. That’s something I had to learn.

Why This Works (Without Overcomplicating It)

The Binder Works because…

👉 It’s consistent
👉 It’s simple
👉 It doesn’t overwhelm

Kids don’t need 20+ activities, perfect lessons, or constant stimulation. They need repetition, exposure,  and confidence boosters.

Both count. That’s something I had to learn.

You don’t need to recreate a classroom at home. You just need something that works most days so it is simple, repeatable, and fits your life. And for us, this binder has been exactly that.

If you’re thinking about doing this, don’t overthink it. Start with:
  • A Binder
  • A few posters (You can make or buy)

That’s it. You can always build from there.

About Me

Hi, I'm Ally

I’m a mom who thinks (maybe too much) about how homes function — not just how they look, but how they support daily life.

Over time, I’ve found that when a home is set up well, everything shifts. Kids gain independence, routines feel lighter, and there’s less need to step in for every little thing.

So I pay attention to where things break down and reshape spaces to better support how our family lives. That can be a small shift, or reworking an entire system.

That way of thinking shows up in everything I share here — from how I set up our playroom, prep meals, plan trips, organize spaces, and create meaningful moments at home. Not as separate ideas, but as part of a home shaped with intention.

I don’t believe in perfect systems. But I do believe this:
👉 The way your home functions shapes how your family lives.
