What to Teach Before Kindergarten (Simple Checklist for Moms) 🎒✨

If you’ve ever wondered…“Is my child ready for kindergarten?” You’re not alone. And the truth is—most of us don’t need a complicated curriculum or hours of structured learning.

We just need to know: What actually matters

So I put together a simple checklist of what we focus on at home—nothing overwhelming, just the basics that build confidence. Here’s exactly what to teach before kindergarten to prepare them at home without the overwhelm.

✔️ Quick Kindergarten Readiness Checklist

If you’re short on time, here’s the quick version 👇

Before kindergarten, most kids benefit from exposure to:

  • ✏️ Letters + basic sounds
  • 📖 Early reading awareness
  • 🔢 Counting + simple math concepts
  • 📅 Understanding routines (days, schedule)
  • 🌎 General knowledge (colors, animals, seasons)
  • 🧠 Following directions
  • 🧍 Independence skills (shoes, hygiene, cleanup)
  • 💬 Communication (expressing needs)
  • 💛 Social-emotional skills (sharing, taking turns)

💛 First—What Actually Matters

Before we get into the checklist, here’s something important:

Kindergarten readiness is NOT about:

❌ memorizing everything
❌ sitting still for hours
❌ being “ahead.”

Its about:

👉 Confidence
👉 Independence
👉 Exposure

🎓 What Schools Actually Want you to teach before kindergarten

If you’re like me, you might be wondering…“Okay, but what do schools actually expect kids to know before kindergarten?” So I looked into it—and here’s the reassuring truth:

👉 Most schools are not expecting academic perfection.

They’re looking for a mix of:

  • Basic academic exposure
  • Social-emotional readiness
  • Independence

🧠 According to Early Childhood Experts…

Organizations like the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and American Academy of Pediatrics emphasize that kindergarten readiness is less about memorization and more about:

  • Following simple directions
  • Communicating needs
  • Playing and interacting with others
  • Managing basic self-care

👉 In other words, real-life skills matter just as much as academics.

🧠 What Might Surprise You

Many kindergarten teachers say they would rather have a child who can:

  • Follow directions
  • Communicate clearly
  • Handle frustration

…than a child who can read early but struggles socially. You don’t need to rush academics or feel like you need to “get ahead”. We are here to build a strong foundation.

📊 What Kindergarten Teachers Actually Expect

According to kindergarten readiness guidelines, most children entering kindergarten are expected to:

✏️ Early Literacy

  • Recognize some letters
  • Understand that print has meaning
  • Listen to and engage with stories

🔢 Math Basics

  • Count (often to 10–20)
  • Recognize some numbers
  • Understand simple comparisons (more/less)

🧍 Social & Emotional Skills

  • Take turns
  • Share (even if imperfectly 😅)
  • Separate from parents without major distress

🧼 Independence

  • Use the bathroom independently
  • Wash hands
  • Manage basic belongings
  • Put on and zip up jackets

✅ Our 'Teach Before Kindergarten' Checklist

Here’s what we focus on in our home:

✏️ 1. Letters + Sounds

  • Recognize most letters
  • Know basic letter sounds
  • Beginning awareness of reading

👉 We keep this simple with CVC Word Flashcards and basic letter visuals so it feels more like a game than a lesson.

📖 2. Early Reading Skills

  • Recognizing simple words
  • Understanding that words carry meaning
  • Listening to stories and retelling basics

👉 We’ve found that simple Early Reader Books for Kids build confidence way faster than trying to push full reading too early.

💡 Tip: Go to your Local Library..
Your Local library probably has an “Easy Readers” section. Ours is separate from the kids area, which consists mostly of story-time books that a parent would read, but not ‘reading readiness’ books. Ask your librarian for assistance.

🔢 3. Basic Math Skills

  • Count to 20 (or higher over time)
  • Recognize numbers
  • Understand simple concepts like:
    • more / less
    • bigger / smaller

👉 Using visual tools like number charts or simple manipulatives (we like these posters for Counting Math Manipulatives) makes this click much faster.

📅 4. Time + Routine Awareness

  • Days of the week
  • Basic understanding of “morning/night”
  • Following a simple routine

👉 This helps them transition into the school structure

🌎 5. General Knowledge

  • Colors and shapes
  • Animals and basic categories
  • Seasons and weather

👉 Think exposure—not memorization

🧠 6. Listening + Following Directions

  • Can follow 1–2 step directions
  • Can sit and listen for short periods
  • Understand simple instructions

👉 This is HUGE for classroom success

🧍‍♂️ 7. Independence Skills

  • Putting on socks and shoes
  • Putting on and zipping up jackets
  • Cleaning up toys
  • Basic hygiene (wiping, washing hands, etc.)

👉 Something as simple as a Collaspable Step Stool can completely change how independent your child feels during daily routines.

💬 8. Communication Skills

  • Expressing needs
  • Asking for help
  • Basic conversation

👉 Confidence matters more than perfection

💡 Tip: Get them talking, ask them about..
“What was your favorite food you at today?” Or “If you could pick what we do tomorrow, what would it be? Why?” Why questions are great to get them to talk!

💛 9. Emotional Readiness

  • Taking turns
  • Handling frustration (somewhat 😅)
  • Being away from parents
  • Playing board games or card games (Learn to be a humble winner or a good loser)

👉 This is just as important as academics

⏱ A Realistic Approach

You don’t need hours of learning every day to teach before kindergarten. Even 20–30 minutes a day …adds up quickly. Because remember, “How do you eat an elephant?” One bite at a time.

🚨 DON’T Stress About… a fancy curriculum, perfect lessons, or a Pinterest-perfect setup. Kids learn best through consistency—not perfection

👉 If you want a simple way to cover all of this daily, this is the kindergarten prep binder we use at home 👀

Final Thoughts 💛

If you take anything from this post, let it be this:
  • You don’t need to do everything
  • You just need to do something consistently

Because confidence doesn’t come from perfection—It comes from repetition, exposure, and small daily wins. And that’s what actually prepares them for kindergarten.

👉 Honestly, having the right tools makes this so much easier—and keeps you consistent even on busy days…

About Me

Hi, I'm Ally

I’m a mom who thinks (maybe too much) about how homes function — not just how they look, but how they support daily life.

Over time, I’ve found that when a home is set up well, everything shifts. Kids gain independence, routines feel lighter, and there’s less need to step in for every little thing.

So I pay attention to where things break down and reshape spaces to better support how our family lives. That can be a small shift, or reworking an entire system.

That way of thinking shows up in everything I share here — from how I set up our playroom, prep meals, plan trips, organize spaces, and create meaningful moments at home. Not as separate ideas, but as part of a home shaped with intention.

I don’t believe in perfect systems. But I do believe this:
👉 The way your home functions shapes how your family lives.
